With the coldest weather of the season expected to last for the next several days, making sure your house and your car are ready to deal with this arctic blast is very important. "What we're concerned about is the use of space heaters," C.W. Sigman, Kanawha County's Fire Coordinator said. "We've had several fires in the region here recently with people using space heaters. They've got to remember keep that three feet of separation. That space heater needs its space. At least three feet whether it's a kerosene heater, electric heater, whatever it may be or your fireplace." Cranking up your car in the morning after a long winter's night can be a dicey proposition if your battery isn't up to snuff. Temperatures in the single digits can wreak havoc on an older battery's cranking power. But that's far from the only concern. "Well, the biggest issue would be that your fluids would freeze up," Billy Kepple with Marty's Tire Stores said. "You want to make sure you have plenty of anti-freeze in there, not just water. Make sure your mix is going to be good to about twenty degrees below zero. Windshield washer fluid is another thing people don't think about until it's gone." With a low of eight degrees predicted for Tuesday night it's smart to take steps to make sure the weather doesn't put you out in the cold. "So, if you have an unvented fuel fire heater or a gas heater that might be an issue you want to make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector and alarm in your home also," Sigman said.
