Fire tears through a home just outside of Summersville, and sadly not everyone made it out alive.

Nicholas County 911 first started getting calls around 3:20 Monday afternoon about a fire on Route 55 and two people were feared trapped inside. Their worst fears were confirmed when two men were found dead inside the home.

Diane Walls, of Mount Nebo, says she's simply overcome with grief after learning her bother, and brother-in-law weren't able to make it out of their Muddlety home after flames tore through it on Monday.

"Have you all ever had to experience something like this, a loss this devastating?" asked reporter Leslie Rubin.

"No, not like this," she said shaking, choking back tears.

Walls says her brother Delbert Cutlip, who was in his 50's, and her brother-in-law, James "Bud" Freeman, who was in his 60's, died in the fire.

"That's one thing, we've always been a close family, we've always been close. We've always been there for each other," said Walls.

She says Cutlip was bedridden and Freeman and his wife, Geraldine, helped to take care of him. Geraldine was able to escape the fire, and she says Freeman tried to save Cutlip but was overcome by the smoke and the flames.

"He tried to get him out but couldn't make it out with him," she said.

Firefighters remained on scene late into the evening and had to shut down Route 55 at Muddlety to investigate.

The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office says the fire is undetermined right now.

Walls says she will remember both men for their giving nature and willingness to help others. She says Freeman was once a fireman himself.

We now know the names of two men who died in a house fire Monday afternoon in Summersville.

Family members have confirmed that Delbert Cutlip and James Freeman died in the fire that broke out at a house on Route 55 in Muddlety.

Family members say that Freeman's wife was in the home at the time of the fire, but was able to make it out safely.

Fire crews are working to determine what caused the fire.
