The Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter had lots of helping hands Monday.
Volunteers from Americorps spent the day helping out in many ways. They took turns walking dogs and cleaning cages.
Lindsey Emerson, who volunteered Monday, said, "It's wonderful. Since they're locked up in their cages all day. They get to play."
It doesn't take too much to make these furry faces happy. Emerson said, "Sometimes they just want loved on. Sometimes they don't even want to go on the walk. They just want to sit with you."
They also brought in donations they collected in the community. Those supplies included dog and cat food, cat litter, newspapers, leashes and toys.
"It's been awesome. It's definitely been a lot more than what I was expecting, a lot more supplies, a lot more volunteers out here. It's really great," said Tanya Hunt, who helped out Monday.
Hunt said they were happy to participate in the day of service.
"It's wonderful. It's great to spend Martin Luther King Day actually doing something to help other people, which is really in the spirit of the day," she said.
The shelter is always looking for volunteers and donations. You can call 304-696-5551 for more information.
