This is a matter that has everyone buffaloed.
Authorities are trying to figure out who should deal with at least two water buffaloes that began showing up in 93-year-old Mildred McIntyre's yard in Jackson County in October. The adult animal appears to be a 1,500 pound, maybe domestic, water buffalo that has been seen accompanied by her calf.
The animals are causing some minor damage, but McIntyre enjoys watching them even though she has to chase them away by rattling a garbage can lid on occasion. She is concerned someone may shoot them and so is her daughter-in-law, Sibyl McIntyre, who believes they wandered off from an old game farm near the Mason County line.
State agricultural officials are trying to determine who has jurisdiction and what they can do about the animals if they do. The Division of Natural Resources is taking a pass, saying the agency only regulates native animals. Efforts to pass an exotic animal law have failed in West Virginia.
