Most of West Virginia was spared the brunt of a winter storm but the southern part of the state saw up to a foot of snow.

The National Weather Service reported Friday that portions of Mercer County and the Bluefield area received 11 to 12 inches of snow, while Summers County recorded 10 inches.

Four to 6 inches was reported southeast of Beckley, while up to 6 inches fell in McDowell County.

Appalachian Power reported nearly 5,000 customers without power. Most are in Monroe, Mercer and McDowell counties.

The Kanawha Valley was expected to dodge any snow accumulation Thursday, but the forecast for Beckley and area farther south was calling for heavy wet snow.

Eyewitness News Meteorologist Brandon Stover said 4 to 8 inches of snow was expected for Beckley and areas south while the higher elevations from Bluefield down to Fancy Gap, Va., could get as much as a foot of snow.

Some power outages could be possible with the heavy wet snow that is expected to blanket that portion of the state. Officials reported school closings Thursday in Raleigh, Fayette, Mercer, Summers, Greenbrier and Monroe counties.

The weather should improve for the Beckley area and areas south on Friday with bright sunshine and no accumulation expected, Stover said.

Meanwhile, Stover said only passing flurries were expected in the Kanawha Valley Thursday with high temperatures in the mid-30s. Thursday night was expected to be clear and cold with temperatures dipping into the low 20s by Friday morning.

With the residual moisture remaining, Stover said, some patches of black ice were possible Friday morning on area roadways.

Friday's forecast in the Kanawha Valley calls for sunny skies with highs in the upper 30s. On Saturday, temperatures should be more spring like with highs in the low to mid-50s.
