South Charleston police said they used pepper spray on an Alum Creek man after he allegedly tried to steal items from Walmart, resisted arrest and escaped from custody.
Police said they arrested Michael Loftis Wednesday after they found him with $3,500 worth of merchandise.
During the arrest, police said Loftis became aggressive, elbowed the officer in the face and a bunch of pill bottles fell out.
Officers also said while he was being processed at headquarters he allegedly tried to escape.
