Joe Miller has retired as commissioner of the state Division of Motor Vehicles.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Miller's retirement Tuesday. DMV Deputy Commissioner Steven Dale will become acting commissioner.
Miller has been DMV commissioner since 2009. He also held the position from 1997 to 2001.
Under Miller, the DMV modernized its licensing and vehicle systems, established a veteran's designation on driver's licenses and complied with federal identification requirements meant to curb terrorism.
Dale has served in a variety of roles during a DMV career of more than 30 years. In his most recent position, Dale was responsible for DMV's legislative program.
