Cabell County schools could soon be moving toward a balanced calendar for the school year.

School officials are rolling out a potential game plan to move to have a shorter summer break and longer breaks throughout the school year by the 2014-15 school year. One option would be having four, 45-day quarters in the school year with three 15-day breaks and one 30-day break. The shorter breaks would be called intersessions. While school would not officially be in session during this time, teachers, parents, students and others could work together on things like remediation, enrichment, catching up and extra help. Attendance would be optional for students and teachers during the intersessions.

They said some of the biggest benefits of a balanced calendar will be closing the gap between low-income students, improved attendance rates, increased graduation rates and decreased discipline problems.

They will be meeting with staff, parents and community members over the next several weeks to go over how the changes would work. Here's a schedule of the meetings:

Jan. 29 - Huntington Middle School
Feb. 11 - Barboursville Middle School
Feb. 12 - Enslow Middle School
Feb. 25 - Milton Middle School
Feb. 26 - Beverly Hills Middle School

Staff would meet on those days from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the public would meet from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

"This will be a big change for the community if the board decides to go forward. So they want to be sure that they have heard from all segments of the community about this," said Gerry Sawrey, assistant superintendent of school improvement.

School officials are encouraging special interest groups, including those interested in child care, private preschools, Head Start, church groups, higher education, high school students, businesses and sports teams, to attend the meetings. You can schedule a presentation by contacting Sawrey at 304-528-5203 or "gsawrey@access.k12.wv.us".
