An intermodal terminal in the process of being developed in Prichard now has a name.
The facility will be known as The Heartland Intermodal Gateway at Prichard, according to a news release from the Rahall Transportation Institute. The facility will be composed of industrial and warehouse space with intermodal transportation access, the release said. The site has 100 acres of land, is located by a Norfolk Southern rail line and has access to highways.
Groundbreaking for the new terminal is expected sometime this year. Construction for the site preparation and a bridge could take a year and a half to complete.
In September 2012, community members and stakeholders gathered to propose a name for the new facility. The new name was voted on unanimously.
