Police officer involved shootings are up sharply since December. They include four fatal shootings of suspects in Kanawha, Mercer, Greenbrier and Logan counties.
The state and federal government do not track officer involved shootings, but published accounts appear to show six shootings in 2011. The four 2013 shootings are still under review, but authorities say so far they appear justified legally and administratively.
Veteran officers told Eyewitness News that suspects with mental, drug and suicide issues often do not give cops much of an option.
