The Kanawha Bureau of Investigation said it is continuing its investigation of Saturday’s officer involved shooting on Quick Road. An autopsy on the deceased, Lawrence Edward “Pete” Vaughan, was completed on Monday by the state Medical Examiner's Office, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said previously they shot and killed Vaughan after they responded to a domestic shooting and he started firing at the officers. The searches at the scene have concluded. The physical evidence collected is being sent to the West Virginia State Police Laboratory for analysis. Firearms and bullet fragments will be sent to that lab’s ballistics unit. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave as is the policy in an officer involved shooting. Additionally, the Kanawha County Prosecutor's Office is being kept up to date on the investigation, the release said. A day after the shooting and the reality of what happened here at this home on Quick Rd in Pinch is starting to sink in for family friend, Julia Stricker. Her friend, 49-year-old Lawrence Vaughn, who went by Pete, was killed by police in a shootout Saturday evening. "Some people your related to blood and some people your related by love," said Stricker, "I consider them family and this is such a tragedy. It's such a tragedy that things have escalated to this." Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies initially responded to a disturbance call at the home for reports that Vaughn was assaulting his mother inside. But when police arrived, things turned deadly. "Upon approaching the house, they saw the suspect inside. He seemed rather aggetated. As they aproached the house, they went on the front porch," said Kanawha County Sheriff John Rutherford, "The subject exited the house in a hurry through the front door. Started firing at the deputies. The deputies immediatly took tatical positions, returned fire, and the subject is deceased." Neighbors say they heard the gunshots but weren't quite sure what was happening. "Well we though it was firecrackers. Then all the sudden we see cops show up," said neighbor Sarah Mollohan, "We got kind of scared for the babies and it had been that close." The suspects mother was inside during the whole ordeal. Family friends say she is now staying with family and is still in shock. "She said that she just heard the gun fire and she passed out. So she didn't remember a whole lot of what happened," said Stricker, "She said she woke up with one of the policemen holding her hand and they told her what had happened." Family and friends say they are thankful no one else was hurt. And are now left to mourn Vaughn and try to comprehend why this happened. "He was a nice person to know," said Mollohan, "Just not his character to go off like that." Police have released the name of a man killed in a shooting involving a Kanawha County deputy.
