Hurricane , Putnam County , West Virginia

Over the past few weeks people in the Lower Coach Road, Kingswood Estates, and Linden Lane areas have reported day time break-ins.

And now Mayor Scott Edwards and Hurricane police are urging every one in the area to be on high alert.

"You know the second amendment allows us to protect ourselves," said Lower Coach resident John Mangus, "And I plan to do just that."

The Lower Coach area in Hurricane is one of the areas to be hit with several home break-ins over the past few weeks. At least seven of these burglaries happened during the day and the suspect has been armed.

"These have been at gun point. So the seriousness has definitely gone up with them," said mayor Scott Edwards, "I'm afraid that somebody's going to get hurt or killed, you know, whether it's him, a home owner, or a kid or something when he does his break-ins."

So far no one has been hurt.

But in two of the break - ins, people were inside when the suspect came in with a gun.

Edwards says he believes the robber is after guns and police are urging people to be aware of their surroundings.

"The only thing you can do is keep a close eye out, talk to your neighbors, let them know if you're not home or let them know...there's things going on, so they can look," said Cpt. Joe Sisk of Hurricane Police Department, "If there's a strange car in your neighborhood, something's going on, it may be small to you but might be big for the police department. Give us a call and let us know."

And although resident of Lower Coach are on high alert, Mangus is hoping the suspect will be found soon.

"The mayor is very aware of it. Chief Mullens [of Hurricane Police] is very aware of it. They do a good job and I'm sure that they'll catch him pretty quick."

Police say the suspect is a male, about 5'9 to six feet tall with light hair and a thin build.

If you see anything suspicious, you're urged to call 911.

Hurricane Police are investigating a string of home invasions in the area.

Investigators say over the past few weeks, people in the Lower Coach Road, Kingswood Estates, and Linden Lane areas have reported daytime home invasions. Police say at least seven homes have been broken into, two at gunpoint.

We are told the suspect is around 6' tall, with dark hair and a thin build. He was last seen wearing camouflage pants, a black hooded sweatshirt and a camouflage jacket.

Police believe the suspect is targeting homes where he believes there are guns.

Investigators are urging people to be aware of their surroundings and not to hesitate to call 911 if they see anything suspicious.
