State Police said the suspect in a Logan County murder is now dead.
State Police said John Dempsey was shot and killed by police Thursday night following a series of events and two separate crime scenes.
Troopers said Dempsey stabbed and killed Freddie Williams, 55, inside Williams' home in Taplin Thursday night, then attempted a home invasion at a neighboring home, but was thwarted by the homeowner who had a gun.
Capt. D.M. Nelson said Dempsey then carjacked a woman.
A police pursuit ensued and ended in the Man area, where Dempsey was shot and killed, State Police said.
Nelson said Dempsey pulled a gun on troopers before he was killed.
State Police said Dempsey previously had been questioned in a home invasion last year at Williams' residence, but he had not been charged in that case.
Meanwhile, Dempsey was the primary suspect in the murder of Grover Morrison, 88, on Tuesday. Morrison was found dead in his home on Stratton Street.
Police believed Dempsey was in the Man area because that is where Morrison's car was found abandoned in a Rite Aid parking lot.
Morrison was well-known throughout his town. He was a longtime bank executive at the old National Bank of Logan. Visitation for Morrison is set for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Honaker Funeral Home in Logan and from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Funeral services for Morrison are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Logan.
