Frank and Janet Strohl found an unfamiliar charge on their Frontier Communications bill. It was for $39.95.

However, they hadn't ordered any services or products. The Strohls contacted the third party billing company, ILD Teleservices and had the charges taken off.

"You have a false name, a false position billed to my home phone number," Janet Strohl said. "I mean, I don't know how they got all that information which isn't real if its not a scam."

ILD Teleservices has been sued by Connecticut, Wisconsin and the Federal Trade Commission because of fraud allegations. ILD settled each of the lawsuits.

ILD charges appear on Frontier Communications bills but the company says it can help protect its customers by blocking all third party charges.

"That is a service that we offer and it provides our customers with the convenience of having other charges added to their bill," Rich O'Brien, Vice President of Marketing for Frontier Communications said. "But if you want to make sure no charges are added to your service give us a call and we'll make sure that doesn't happen."

O'Brien says Frontier investigates complaints and approaches third party billers for refunds if customers ask for help. In addition to "cramming" scams, where fake charges are added to your bill, O'Brien says Frontier can also assist with identity theft.

"There's also other concerns like identity theft protection and we offer those same services. You don't even have to be a Frontier customer to get that type of consultation," O'Brien said.

O'Brien says a key to avoid getting ripped off is to check your bill and routinely have it reviewed every few months to make sure you aren't getting hit with bogus charges.

To contact Frontier Communications customer service with questions about your bill or to request a consultation to review your account or ask about identity theft protection, call 888-FRONTIER.
