The former mayor of a small town in southeast Ohio must pay back more than $19,000 after pleading guilty to theft in office. A judge in Athens County also ordered that the former mayor of Jacksonville can never hold public office again. The Athens Messenger reports that George Pallo apologized in court on Friday. Pallo stepped down from his office two weeks ago after serving as mayor for more than 30 years. Authorities say he deposited money designated for the village into a fire fund and used some of the money for personal use. They say he also opened a credit card in the village's name without authorization and bought a lawn mower. Copyright 2013 Associated Press. All rights reserved. A mayor in Athens County, Ohio, has stepped down amid charges that he used thousands of dollars in city funds for personal use. George Pallo, 56, of Jacksonville was charged with two counts of theft in office and two counts of grand theft, according to a news release from Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn. Between January 2011 and December 2012, the suspect is accused of taking funds designated for Jacksonville and placing them into the fire fund for personal use, the news release said. Blackburn said a credit card was opened in the town's name without authorization and a lawnmower that cost more than $5,000 was purchased and checks written out to "cash." A total amount of more than $19,000 was allegedly used from the fund for personal uses. The Ohio Investigative Unit was looking into the misuse of charitable donations to two liquor stores in Athens County. That led them to investigate funds used for the village of Jacksonville. Pallo resigned as mayor of the village of Jacksonville on Tuesday. Pallo is set to be in court Jan. 18. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
