The Ashland Police Department is warning the public of a scam that claims to be from an electric company that will shut off your power.
The police department has received several reports about the scam in which the caller says he is from American Electric Power (AEP) and tells the homeowner that the electric bill is past due. The caller then says that a truck is on its way to shut off the power, but if you pay quickly, the power company will waive the late charge and cancel the truck, police said.
Police said the scammer goes by a name such as "Carlos Menandez" and is calling from 317-493-5507.
AEP has been notified of the scam. Anyone with question regarding his or her bill should contact the power company.
