When you hear that someone has gone into cardiac arrest the story usually doesn't end well. But thanks to the quick action of Jill Gilbert, the story for Herb Phelps has a different ending.
In October, Gilbert, who mows grass for a living was on her way to her next job when she was stopped in traffic on Cow Creek Road in Hurricane.
When she looked over to the side of the road she saw Phelps laying on the ground and said she knew something was wrong.
"I said 'Let me try to help'. So I just immediately checked for a pulse, which there was none," said Gilbert, "And I started doing CPR. And I kept talking to him. I kept saying 'OK buddy, let's get going here' and I pretty well knew he was bad."
Phelps was driving himself to the hospital for chest pains.
He had called 911 before leaving his home, but not even a mile from his house he went into cardiac arrest.
Paramedics, who were already in route to Phelps, found him unresponsive and Gilbert performing cpr.
"In my 12 years of emergency services, this is a first," said Brian Hudson of Putnam County EMS, "He wouldn't be here today if it weren't for Jill."
Quick action from everyone that Phelps is thankful for.
"[It] makes me feel really good and confident that people care enough about you to take charge and do their work," said Phelps.
Phelps has been home for about a month and is now doing much better. So much so that on Saturday he had the opportunity to meet the strangers who saved his life.
"I'm still finding out about what happened and who was involved and saving my life," said Phelps, "I got to meet them today, just overwhelmed."
