Disturbing allegations coming to light after a Fayette County bus driver is accused of having sex with a teenager on his bus route.
Steven "Rick" Malay, 54, of Fayetteville is off the job as a bus driver after a 14-year-old girl came forward claiming she had sex with Malay at her home in Oak Hill.
State police say he admitted to going to the girl's home late at night, on two different occasions, but he denied having any type of sexual contact.
Troopers saw enough evidence to charge Malay with two counts of third degree sexual assault, and two counts of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, or custodian. Troopers say he's been the alleged victim's bus driver for five years, suggesting he's known her since she was at least 9-years-old.
"It brings to mind that we need to continuously train our employees on what that means to be a professional," explains Fayette County Schools Superintendent Keith Butcher. Butcher won't say how long Malay has worked for the school system because it is a personnel matter. He will only say that he is not at work, as of today.
Butcher says bus drivers must pass a background check before being hired.
"We really would like to assure our parents that we do everything that we can to ensure the safety of our students, to the citizens, that we're running an efficient and safe school system," he said.
