The Big Brother Big Sister program has been around for more than 100 years. It operates in all 50 states and 12 countries. The impact the program has on young people is profound in so many ways. And while many children have been helped here in the Kanawha Valley, many more are awaiting matches with a caring adult. Six year old Kalita Wickline is going on her first outing with her new big sister Marla. Marla says she wanted to become a Big so she could help others. Kalita's older brother Dalex has a Big too. Their mom Jennifer wanted Dalex to have a good role model since he doesn't have a father figure in his life and was getting into trouble at school. Dalex's big brother is a Charleston police officer who is part of the community based program. "Me and him just usually grab lunch once a week and went to Christmas party a while back. We talk about what's going on at school and if anyone is bothering me." Jennifer says she has seen a big difference in Dalex in just a few short months. According to the Big Brother Big Sister website, after 18 months Littles in the program are about 50 percent less likely to use illegal drugs and skip school. They also found Littles were more confident in school and got along better with their families. And 83% of former Littles surveyed stated their big instilled values and principles that have guided them through life. Meantime Dalex and Kalita's little brother Darrion is waiting for a Big. "I would like to go snow sledding with him." Right now seven little boys and four little girls in the Kanawha Valley are awaiting matches. So if you have the time and a place in your heart to mentor a child, the impact could be immeasurable. If you would like to be a sponsor or volunteer as a Big Brother or Big Sister give them a call a 304-746-7900 MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
