Authorities said an Ohio man is being evaluated by mental health officials after he used an AK-47 to shoot and kill a dog in Athens County.
Athens County sheriff's deputies responded at 10 a.m. Friday to a home on East Kasler Creek in Amesville, Sheriff Pat Kelley said. Family members inside the home said a 44-year-old male relative had fired shots from an AK-47 and killed a dog, the sheriff said. Deputies surrounded the home and were able to communicate with a brother and sister inside. The sister was able to leave and said her brother was trying to talk the shooter into putting the gun down, deputies said. At about 11:50 a.m., deputies were able to secure the home without incident.
The suspect is now being evaluated by Tri-County Mental Health. Charges are pending until the mental health evaluation is complete.
