Boone County says goodbye to its sheriff, and welcomes a familiar face to the top cop position.
After 30 years in law enforcement, Sheriff Rodney Miller is turning in his gun and badge, and handing over the reins to a familiar face.
"I have my own reasons for wanting to make things better. I'm like everyone else, I just had the opportunity to do it," explains Miller.
He's been sheriff for eight years, and worked his way up the ranks after being sworn-in in 1982.
He says he's proud of his tenure, and helped get new and better equipment for the department.
"We've come a long, long way over the last several years and you know, we think these guys are well trained and well equipped and the right choice to protect the people in our county," he says.
Randall White will succeed Miller as sheriff, but he's no stranger to law enforcement. He's worked alongside Miller for many years, and was even his training officer in the 80's. He retired last year.
White says he will continue to build off of Miller's work, and hopes to make the department even stronger.
"I'm not coming in to a bunch of strangers. I've worked with every guy here. You know, I've been out in the field with them. They know who I am, they know what I'll do," says White.
"I think we're at the point where the public demands a professional sheriff, and that's certainly what we're getting with him," Miller says.
"Don't let the politics and and the negativity get you down. There's much more good in our county than what you hear. We only hear about the bad stuff, the good stuff's out there," says Miller, offering advice to his successor.
