Thieves ruined Christmas for a family in Charleston.
Jennifer Hundley said Christmas presents she and her husband had packed away in a unit at Capitol Mini Storage in Kanawha City were stolen. She first rented a unit when she was moving and felt confident her belongings would be safe because of the security cameras on the property.
Hundley said she couldn’t believe what she found when she came to the storage facility over the weekend.
After reporting the break in, Hundley said she found those security cameras were not working. She also said Charleston police have received several reports of thefts from Capitol Mini Storage in recent months.
A woman who answered the phone at Capitol Mini Storage Thursday identified herself as Brenda and said she was the site manager. She said she was aware of the theft and had spoken with Hundley. She said the facility does have brand new cameras that are working, but they cover only the main gate and to the middle of the parking lot. She said they do not cover the area where Hundley’s unit is located.
The site manager said there have been thefts from other storage units, and they have been reported to police.
“We cooperate with the police and do the best we can to help them,” she said. “We want these people caught just as much as the people who own the units.”
