Kentucky State Police in Pikeville are warning the public of an Internet scam that has affected people in the area.
Police said the scam originates from the Craigslist website in which scammers are purchasing items from people online, according to a news release from State Police. The suspects involved in the scam are sending cashier checks in the mail for an amount that is greater than the negotiated price, police said. They then ask the seller to keep $50 dollars for their troubles and to send the rest back to the United Kingdom.
Kentucky State Police are asking anyone who has received these requests to contact them at 606-433-7711.
