Dozens of dogs now have a home for the holiday after an overwhelming response from the public following a deadly distemper outbreak at the Kanawha-Charleston Animal Shelter. It's making Christmas merry for the animals and their newfound companions.
Corey Roberts, 14, of Ravenswood came to pick up his new dog Monday. Corey's dog recently died and his mom said Christmas was put on the back burner because all Corey wanted was a new dog. They found a young boxer-hound mix at the shelter on Greenbrier Street in Charleston and drove from Ravenswood on Christmas Eve to pick up the pup, which they named Polar.
"I was telling him on the way up here, 'Just think you're giving him a home for Christmas and you're getting a new buddy for Christmas.' Couldn't do much better than that," Corey's mom, Crystal Shamblin, said.
About 50 other dogs remain under quarantine and more than a dozen dogs and cats had to be put down because of the distemper outbreak.
The shelter is working to get a temporary shelter open in a building next door so it can start accepting animals again. It should be operational in a couple of weeks.
Polar was among 40 healthy dogs that were available for adoption; four are left. Information about the remaining dogs is available on the shelter's website, www.wvanimalshelter.com. All of the dogs available for adoption are sponsored, meaning the adoption fee is waived.
