Crews worked throughout the day keeping Yeager Airport's runway clear of snow and departing planes de-iced and ready to go.
But problems with two flights resulted in cancellations and headaches for holiday travelers and those waiting for them.
"Well I'm here to pick up my nephew and take him to his home in Summersville. He's coming home for the holidays and we're very excited about that," Alana Morris of Charleston said. "But his plane was diverted back from Charlotte so I'll be waiting a while longer."
That U.S. Airways flight from Charlotte was eventually diverted a second and time and ultimately cancelled. A United flight between Charleston and Washington, D.C. was also called off.
The airport's director says those two cancellations along with a few short weather-related delays were the only hiccups on a busy schedule.
"So far most of the flights have been on schedule maybe a little bit delayed," Rick Atkinson, Yeager Airport director said.
Presents in hand, native West Virginians fortunate to be on flights the weather did not affect and arriving from places like Mississippi and Texas say it is always good to be back home for Christmas.
"I'm very excited to be home," Tricia Sparks of Fort Worth, Texas said. "I haven't been home and there's snow, there's going to be snow for Christmas. I haven' t seen my parents or grandparents since I moved."
"Pretty much it was smooth today," Daren Wicks of Columbus, Mississippi said. "It wasn't too bad. I only had a stop in Atlanta and came straight here so it wasn't too bad getting here. A little bit bumpy on the flight in from Atlanta but other than that it was fine."
