Four more dogs were euthanized at the Kanawha-Charleston Animal Shelter Thursday as the result of distemper, officials said. That brings the total number of dogs euthanized to 12; eight cats also have been euthanized. After all of the animals at the shelter were examined, officials have decided that 52 dogs will be quarrantined at the shelter for observation. Forty dogs will be available for adoption through the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association's web page. The Kanawha-Charleston Animal Shelter Board Thursday adopted a policy to try to save as many animals as possible in the wake of a disease that has forced more than a dozen animals to be euthanized. A total of eight dogs and five cats have been euthanized as the result of an outbreak of distemper. The shelter will be closed at least two weeks and could be closed as long as four weeks. The animal shelter has a dog population of 96 if puppies are included. There may be efforts to have some of the animals adopted through the use of the Internet, but officials are not prepared right now to start such a program. Meanwhile, several veterinarians are examining the animals at the shelter. The Kanawha-Charleston Animal Shelter will be closed for at least two weeks after an outbreak of distemper and another unknown contagious disease forced officials to euthanize some animals. Sixteen dogs were euthanized because of distemper. Shelter Executive Director Donna Clark said 15 of the 60 remaining dogs are sick with some type of illness and may have to be euthanized. Meanwhile, eight cats have been euthanized for some type of contagious disease. Two veterinarians will be going through the shelter and examining the animals.
