A Sissonville High School student is doing what she can to help out a friend whose home was demolished in the gas pipeline explosion in Sissonville one week ago.

The morning after the blast, freshman McKinsey Hugart decided to raise money for her friend Lexy Haynes and Lexy's family. Lexy's home burned to the ground after the explosion last Tuesday.

McKinsey passed out cans to every classroom at Sissonville High School and Sissonville Middle School. She also made posters and asked students to wear blue in support of Lexy.

Within just a few days, students from both schools collected more than $900 for the Haynes family.

A week later, McKinsey handed over the check to Lexy.

Both girls said they couldn't be happier. "I feel like my life is coming back together," Lexy said. "It feels like home again having everyone come together and support me."

McKinsey said she was glad she could help her friend "since she was always good to everyone and she's always supportive of everyone and helping people through things, the community should take their time and give back to her."

The giving continued shortly after the interview with Eyewitness News. Lexy's third grade teacher also showed up at the school to give her a monetary donation.
