Winterplace Ski Resort is pushing back its opening date for ski season.
The Raleigh County resort had hoped to open this weekend. But The Register-Herald reports it now has a tentative opening date of Dec. 21. Winterplace's website says that there is no snow base and no snow being made.
Timberline resort in Davis also plans to open for skiing Dec. 21 and nearby Canaan Valley Resort expects to open Dec. 26.
Snowshoe Mountain in Pocahontas County opened its ski slopes in November.
West Virginia resorts draw more than 800,000 skier visits a year, typically luring visitors from Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio and Florida. Last year, though, the numbers were off by about 15 percent because of late openings and an unusually warm winter.
