A judge sentenced a Charleston teenager convicted of killing an elderly neighbor to 40 years in prison Friday.
Thomas Mallo appeared in Kanawha County Circuit Court to ask for a reduced sentence, but his request wasn't granted. Mallo will turn 18 in December and will begin serving a 40-year prison sentence.
Mallo has been held at the Industrial Home for Youth in Salem since he pleaded guilty in 2010 to second-degree murder. Prosecutors said he fatally stabbed Phyllis Jean Phares, 80, to death in 2009.
Mallo was just 14 years old at the time of Phares' death.
