As of Jan. 1, 2013, the current sheriff, Mike Rutherford, will officially be the new chief deputy of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office. "Love the department. I love the people. I love my job. I'm just flattered and very happy to continue on working," says Mike. And his brother John, he will begin his term as sheriff. A little switch in the office that Kanawha County Commission approved Thursday evening. "We have a good relationship here in county government. We're fortunate in Kanawha County," says John, "I anticipated they were happy with the way the Sheriff's office been ran and it's just exciting to have that confirmed." As brothers, some people would imagine a few toes could be stepped on. But the soon-to-be-Sheriff says it's always business as usual. "We're a family, but at the same time we can be serious and it's not difficult, we've done it so long. You know, I'm not shy," says John. As for Mike, he isn't too shy either. "When we do something stupid, we tell each other we did something stupid and then everything goes fine." Everything going fine is something both brothers hope will continue -- even after the office switch. "I'm looking forward to it and I know under his leadership it will continue on just like we have. And hopefully give the best that we can to the people of Kanawha County," says Mike. Roles will be reversed in the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office starting next month. Johnny Rutherford, the newly elected sheriff, will make his brother and the outgoing sheriff, Mike Rutherford, his chief deputy. Johnny Rutherford served as chief deputy until he took the helm as the administrator at Kanawha County Metro 911. Johnny Rutherford plans to make a few changes as sheriff, but all of the current department heads will keep their jobs. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
