Kanawha County schools in the Sissonville area reopened Wednesday morning a day after an explosion rocked the area.
On Tuesday, students at Flinn Elementary School, Sissonville High School, Sissonville Middle School and Sissonville Elementary had sheltered in place after a huge gas pipeline explosion. Buses were sent to the school Tuesday evening to return any remaining students home.
Several schools were forced to shelter in place as a result of the massive explosion.
Hundreds of students from Sissonville Elementary, Middle and High School were forced to remain at school several hours after the school day ended.
Because the interstate was shut down many parents could not easily reach their kids and school buses couldn't pick them up and take them home. The situation concerned many parents and students, but most agreed they and others are fortunate no one was seriously hurt.
"It was very scary but I wasn't worried about my son at school," Stacy McVey said. "I knew he would be taken care of."
Her son Chase is an 8th grade student. He said a lot of students started crying when they thought the nursing home down the street had burned down. "I called my mom and she was ok, so I was ok," he said.
Most kids were finally back home by 7 p.m. Tuesday.
