A former Education Committee chairman in West Virginia's House of Delegates is the newest member of the state Board of Education.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin appointed Delegate Tom Campbell to the board on Monday, effective immediately.
Campbell is retiring from the Legislature after serving eight terms. The Greenbrier County Democrat chaired House Education in 2005 and 2006.
The 51-year-old accountant joins the board amid discussion of a wide-ranging audit of public schools. His arrival also follows the abrupt firing of Jorea Marple as state schools superintendent.
A pending legal challenge alleges the board violated the state open meetings act when it first voted to oust Marple last month. The board expects to discuss that court case and the hiring of a new superintendent at this month's meetings in Lincoln County.
