A traffic stop turned into quite an ordeal in Kanawha County early Saturday morning, and ended with the driver actually helping police arrest his passenger.
Charleston Police pulled the driver over after allegedly running a light on MacCorkle Avenue. While conducting a field sobriety test on the driver, the officer says the passenger in the car, Mitchell Copen, began yelling at him. According to the criminal complaint, when the officer tried to arrest Copen he tried to hit the officer and take his gun. The driver then stepped in and helped the officer arrest Copen.
Once in the back of the cruiser, police say Copen climbed out the window of the police car. Troopers finally arrested him again.
Copen is charged with numerous charges including battery on a police officer and attempting to disarm and officer.
