What do you get when you combine the worst kids in the world with the story about the birth of Jesus?

You get "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" by Barbara Robinson and performed by Children's Theatre of Charleston. A church's annual Christmas celebration is thrown into chaos when the longtime director gets hurt and jeopardizes the show's future.

A mom is drafted to direct the play and ends up dealing with an unruly bunch of children who decide they want to be onstage.

"The play basically goes around a group of kids who are from a family that's very underprivileged," LeeAnne Rheinlander, who plays Grace Bradley, said. "They fend for themselves. They have a single mom. They're bullies at school. And they end up at church through hearing that we have refreshments there. Free refreshments, so they want to come to church so they can have free refreshments.”

Through intimidation and fear, the Herdmans snag all of the production's major roles. Their involvement ensures that this year's pageant will be very different from those of years gone by.

"Every church there's a Christmas pageant every year and sometimes it gets to be mundane and normal and run of the mill and we forget about the magic of the Christmas story," Debbie Haught, the play's director, said.

The story's narrator is a young girl named Beth. She chronicles the action, but the real journey is taken by the Herdmans, including Imogene who portrays the Virgin Mary.

"Everyone's like, oh the Herdmans, they don't know anything about Christmas, but I think Imogene really changes over the process of this entire play," Rachel Couch, who plays Beth Bradley, said.

"They end up changing the way everyone looks at the Christmas story because to them it's brand new," Haught said.
