A man and woman accused in a purse snatching may not be getting out of jail anytime soon in Kanawha County.
Bradley Molden and Stephanie Hammel are accused of stealing a 75-year-old woman's purse at a rest area in Chelyan on Interstate 77 in September.
According to court documents, Hammel stole the victim's purse while she was in the rest area bathroom. But when the victim tried to get the purse back, Hammel allegedly kicked her in the leg and pushed her down, causing the victim to smack her head off the tile. Police said Hammel and Molden were later tracked down in a stolen vehicle out of Fayette County with the victim's purse.
Prosecutors said Molden and Hammel were originally jailed on $25,000 bond, but charges were dropped against Hammel when the investigating officer did not show up for the preliminary hearing. On Wednesday, Molden and Hammel were back in court for an indictment arraignment. Prosecutors argued that both defendants should be jailed, while the defense argued to keep them out.
Judge Duke Bloom set a $50,000 bond for Molden and Hammel.
