Local radio stations spent Friday trying to help families in need this holiday season.
West Virginia Radio Corp.'s Fifth Annual Circle of Hope campaign got under way about 6 a.m. Friday.
"We are continuing to witness a significant increase in individuals and families seeking our assistance," said John Roberts, executive director of Mountain Mission.
UniCare Health Plan, Inc., the state's largest Medicaid managed care organization, Walmart of Nitro and Southridge, and IVS Hydro each donated $5,000 to the effort, according to a news release from Mountain Mission.
You can help by taking canned food for monetary donations to 1111 Virginia St. E. in Charleston. All proceeds go the Mountain Mission, which will be used to help local families.
"This is our only avenue for reaching out to the community and saying, 'Hey, we need your help,' " Janice Amspoker of the Mountain Mission said. "We need everybody to work together with the team that we have put together here at West Virginia Radio today to help us bring in as much food and money as possible."
The Circle of Hope campaign ends at 6 p.m. Friday. They also will be collecting donations at the Nitro and Southridge Walmarts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday.
Food items that are needed for donation include boxed turkey dressing, sweet potatoes, fruit cocktail, 10-pound bags of potatoes, macaroni and cheese, apple sauce, five-pound bags of sugar and brownie mix.
Organizers expect to collect more than $40,000 in cash and several trailers filled with food during the campaign.
