Chase away the winter blues and those excess pounds by making sure you keep your feet moving.
The Tallman Track Club and the city of Charleston are teaming up to once again offer the Winter Series Walks/Runs that offer events in December, January and February to help keep you fit and motivated. All events start at 31st Street and Virginia Avenue, and registration is at Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Hospital.
Events are as follows:
Sunday, Dec. 9, 1 p.m. 3,000-meter walk (1.8 miles) and 2 p.m. 5,000-meter run (3.1 miles).
Sunday, Jan. 6, 1 p.m. 4,000-meter walk (2.4 miles) and 2 p.m. 8,000-meter run (4.9 miles).
Sunday, Feb. 3, 1 p.m. 5,000-meter walk (3.1 miles) and 2 p.m. 10,000-meter run (6.2 miles).
Same day registration for each event is $20, or advance registration for all three events is $45. Students can register for three events for $20. Advance registration must be received by Dec. 9. The courses are flat, marked and there will be traffic control at major intersections.
Runners and walkers who finish all three events will receive a hooded sweatshirt. There are no age group awards in the walk, just the top three females and males. In the run, the top female and male will win awards. The run also has age group awards of at least three deep, but 25 percent will win awards in big age groups.
Also, there is a chance to make a donation while doing something healthy. Runners and walkers participating in the first Winter Series Walks/Runs on Dec. 9 are being asked to donate a new, unwrapped toy when they come to the events. All toys will go to the “Tower of Toys” project that is being sponsored by Eyewitness News and provides toys for Union Mission to distribute to needy children.
