The Powerball jackpot has now reached $550 million. Even though you're more likely to get struck by lightening or get attacked by a wild animal, a lot of people rushed out on Wednesday to try their luck ahead of the Wednesday night Powerball drawing.
So many tickets have been sold that the winnings climbed from $425 million to $550 million, the largest Powerball jackpot and the second largest lottery jackpot of all time.
"Everybody tells me to give them the winner," Fadi Mougaes, owner of M&M Mart in Kanawha City, says. His store was busy on Wednesday with a lot of people coming in to get their Powerball tickets.
"If you don't buy one you can't win and I've got the winner right here," customer Eric Coleman joked.
And Coleman does have a shot, even though the odds are stacked against him. The chances of winning are 1 in 175 million. But Andi Miller, who works at The Cold Spot in Dunbar, knows all you need is a chance.
"It was so exciting, hopefully we can win this time too," Miller says.
She and 31 other workers from The Cold Spot won $250,000 this spring playing Mega Millions. She's now hoping that lightening will strike twice.
"It's easy, you've just got to have faith," Miller says.
But not everyone is getting in on the Powerball frenzy.
"I don't like to gamble like that, not on things that I can't control," Jeff Means says.
Means isn't letting the lure of a half a billion dollars draw him in -- but even without a ticket he may not be out of the game.
When asked if everyone else who buys a ticket is throwing their money away he said, "No. I'll be calling you up to borrow some money when you win."
And whomever wins the record jackpot will likely have a lot of new found friend.
The deadline for ticket sales is 9:59 Wednesday night. The drawing is 10:59pm.
