A streak of bad luck recently struck the Greenup County Sheriff's Office. Three deputies are on medical leave after being seriously injured on the job.
In just the past couple months, two deputies were hit by cars and one got extremely sick responding to a meth lab bust.
Over the weekend, Deputy Cody Fuller went to serve a warrant at a home on Culp Creek Rd. and the suspect inside was dismantling a shake and bake meth lab. Fuller accidentally inhaled a cloud of smoke and has been in the hospital recovering.
Recently, Deputy Matthew Smith was accidentally hit by a car while he was working an accident. Then, on Halloween night, Deputy Ryan Houston says he was intentionally hit by a driver who dragged him up against his car and pinned him between the vehicles.
All three deputies are off work for quite some time. Sheriff Keith Cooper says this brings his road patrols down thirty percent. Not only does the streak of bad luck take a toll on the community, but also the Sheriff who's close to all three men. "It's like your son getting hurt. I hired most of them and we're very close. It's like a member of your family getting hurt. It's a big worry."
Cooper says it could be as long as a year before Deputies Houston and Smith will be back to work. Fuller still has to see a lung specialist about the meth inhalation.
The Sheriff says he plans to hire a couple more deputies. State Police are helping out by patrolling parts of the County.
