The Kanawha-Charleston Health-Department says when the weather turned colder last month, the home of the Wildcats became the home of the wild rats. Sanitarians say Nitro High School has a rodent problem.
"I just think it needs to be taken care of because it's really disgusting and I think it's a bad place for school 'cause it don't have good health now," Nitro student Taylor Higginbotham said.
"My teachers heard about seeing mice and they screamed about it," Nitro student Cearra Ramsey said. "Like, we were in class one time and she saw one go across her and she like, jumped out of her seat."
Health inspectors say rodents are a common problem in many Kanawha County schools, but that Nitro's situation is a bit more severe.
"It's a moderate infestation," said Sean Carver, a sanitarian at the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department. "They are taking appropriate steps because one of the reasons vermin are vermin is that a moderate problem becomes a severe problem in pretty short order."
Carver says openings which the vermin used to gain access to the school have been closed and that other measures are in place to minimize any potential health threats.
"Pest control is already involved," Carver said. "Traps are out. Holes are being filled. Areas are being cleaned and sanitized. We've also discussed appropriate food storage measures. That's something they're going to have to stay on top of, in part it's a moving target. And if you look at the area it's of course semi-wooded and near to a river so yes, they will always have to be on guard."
Nitro's principal refused to do an on-camera interview to talk about the situation and the steps being taken to correct it.
