West Virginia's gun season for deer hunters is under way, and the Division of Natural Resources is predicting it will be a good one. More than 300,000 hunters are eligible to take part.
Wildlife Resources Chief Curtis Taylor said the November firearms season opens the Monday before Thanksgiving every year. The date can be as early as Nov. 19 or as late as Nov. 25.
This is one of the earlier years. That means hunters are heading out closer to the peak deer rut. Hunters have an advantage when deer are distracted and vulnerable.
The DNR also is reminding hunters that there are 10 counties or portions of counties that require buck firearm hunters to first take an antlerless deer.
As in past years, many counties are open to concurrent antlerless deer hunting on private land and selected public lands.
