An alleged robber is recovering after police say he was shot by the owner of a home he broke into. Dispatchers say a man called 911 around 3:30 Saturday morning and said he shot a man who broke into his home in the 1600 block of 7th Avenue in Charleston. According to a criminal complaint, the homeowner woke up and saw Darin Lanning eating food out of his refrigerator in his T-shirt and underwear. According to court documents, the homeowner says he pointed a gun at Lanning and told him not to move. He says Lanning moved toward him and that's when he shot him in the shoulder. The homeowner then called 911 and held Lanning at gunpoint until police got there. Police say Lanning did not know he was in Charleston and told them that he was in Hurricane and staying with a friend. The homeowner told police that he didn't know Lanning and officers say the door appeared to have been kicked in. Police say they confirmed Lanning had been arrested for public intoxication by Hurricane Police earlier in the morning. Lanning allegedly told Hurricane officers he drank 12 beers and consumed numerous alcoholic shots; however, when Charleston officers interviewed him, they say Lanning could not remember being arrested or how he got to the home in Charleston. Eyewitness News talked to Boggess' neighbor, William Kinney about the incident. Kinney said, "He did the right thing, he didn't have to take a life, he did the right thing. Lanning was taken to the hospital, and was later released. He is currently being held in the South Central Regional Jail on a $25,000 property only bond.
