A large fire has destroyed several units of an apartment complex slated for renovation in Gallia County, Ohio.
The fire happened about 7 p.m. Tuesday in an apartment complex on state Route 325, Rio Grande Fire Chief Bob Brandeberry said. Brandeberry and a member of the Fire Marshal's Department surveyed the damage Wednesday morning.
Brandeberry said the fire was caused by a roof heating unit that malfunctioned and caught fire. It took several hours and six fire departments from two counties to put out the blaze.
A new company had just purchased the apartment complex and had plans to renovate, Brandeberry said. Many of the occupants had moved so work could be done. However, four occupants were still in the process of leaving when the fire broke out. They have been relocated to a new residence.
