Promised layoffs in the coalfields became a reality Monday.
During the next couple of weeks, Newtown Energy is letting go 116 workers at its Peerless Mine in Boone County.
The company announced the move in September.
Electricians, roof bolters, scoop operators and supervisors are among those getting pink slips.
Newtown also is laying off six employees at its Coalburg No. 1 Mine and two salaried warehouse workers.
In all, 124 people will be looking for jobs.
The West Virginia Coal Association estimates more than 3,000 Mountain State coal mining jobs have been lost this year, with 9,000 lost throughout the Appalachian region.
