A new educational urban micro-farm, where people will learn agriculture skills that will allow them to enter into the local food market, will be constructed this weekend on Charleston's West Side.
The farm will be constructed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Sustainable Agriculture Entrepreneur Classroom Garden at the corner of Ohio Street and Washington Street West, according to a news release from the Charleston Area Alliance.
The build-out of the educational micro-farm is the first step in the Charleston Area Alliance's new Sustainable Agriculture Entrepreneur (SAGE) initiative. SAGE aims to develop "agripreneurs" (agriculture based entrepreneurs) for the local food market. The initiative will teach members of the public how to cultivate a variety of agricultural products. Then, it will help these individuals find outlets, such as local restaurants and food suppliers, to sell the crops, in an effort to stimulate growth of the local food economy.
The design of the outdoor classroom was drafted by students at the Center for Sustainability Studies at Davis and Elkins College. Other partners in the project include: Bullock Properties, University of Charleston, West Virginia University Extension Service and KISRA.
The inaugural SAGE class will kick off in January 2013 when participants officially begin the initiative, which will include 12 agriculture courses in urban micro-farming and six courses in entrepreneurship.
