A couple of high school students in Putnam County who were supposed to be doing time in detention are in more trouble after they allegedly were caught with prescription drugs.
The Winfield High School juniors were scheduled to attend after-school detention Wednesday, when they were detained and investigated by officials at the school about 3 p.m., Winfield Police Chief John Perrine said.
A resource officer told police that some students reported a couple of other students were in a bathroom using illegal substances.
Police said a 16-year-old junior was found with 15 capsules of 20 milligrams of Vyvanse and one empty pill container of 800 milligrams of Metaxalone. The 17-year-old junior was found with one capsule of Vyvanse, police said.
Police said the 16-year-old told authorities that he had stolen the prescription medication from family members and had self-medicated himself. He also told police he had shared one 20 milligram capsule with his 17-year-old friend, Perrine said.
Winfield Officer Mike Kordusky said Vyvanse is an amphetamine that is a popular medication licensed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults, adolescents and children.
The 16-year-old student was charged with possession and intent to distribute prescription medication. School officials said the 16-year-old student will be expelled from Winfield High School and the 17-year-old student will be suspended. Officials are still reviewing possible criminal charges against the 17-year-old.
