One police department will have a permanent way for the community to drop off unwanted prescription medications.
The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office announced that it will have a "Drug Take Back Box" from the Ohio Attorney General's Office, a news release from the sheriff's office said. The sheriff's department hosts several drug take back events each year, but wanted a way the public could dispose of medications on a daily basis.
The box will be located in the lobby of the sheriff's office in Ironton and will be available at all times. Citizens just have to dispose of the medication in the secure box, with no interaction with law enforcement. All the medication will then be incinerated.
The hope is to curb prescription drug abuse of friends or family members.
Police said needles or sharp objects should not be deposited, liquids should be tightly capped and put in a zip-lock bag and labels should be removed or names should be blacked out with a marker.
