National Guard liaison officers and county emergency management staffers share the latest news about Superstorm Sandy and how it hurt their areas.
Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and West Virginia Adjutant General James Hoyer led the video briefings, which brought together troops from all across the state to paint a more complete picture of the storm and its aftermath.
Tomblin says he is very pleased with how the guard has answered the emergency call.
"I think we were very well prepared," Tomblin said. "And I give a lot of thanks to the National Guard, to our Department of Highways to our Division of Forestry employees for all of their help. Plus the local office of emergency services . They were on top of things."
The West Virginia contingent is among the more than ten thousand National Guard troops in 13 states who have been mobilized to assist in the response to Hurricane Sandy. General Hoyer says lessons learned in combat are being put to good use in the wake of the storm.
"Responding to weapons of mass destruction issues, being a part of the Department of Homeland Security's critical infrastructure protection assets," General James Hoyer said. "Those assets are being used in this state emergency to assist first responders to get into collapsed structures, assist the assessments that are going to go on today of structures."
Hoyer says the guard's main focus is checking out structures hit hard by heavy snowfall and making sure they're safe. He also says troops are busy delivering food, water and medicine...and making health and welfare calls on people who may be cut off by flood waters and deep snow.
