With the heavy winds, rain and snow hitting Southern West Virginia, the National Park Service said Monday that all park areas of the New River Gorge National River were closed at noon Monday.
All park areas, including visitor centers, campgrounds and trails, were included in the closure and will remain closed until further notice, according to a news release from the National Park Service.
The release said the Frankenstorm event could bring a total of 9 to 17 inches of snow to the area, and in higher elevations up to 3 feet.
Visitors and community members should avoid the campgrounds and trails where weakened tree systems from the derecho will create hazardous conditions. Weather alert updates will be posted to the park’s website at www.nps.gov/neri. You can also find updates on the park’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/newrivergorgenps.
The length of the closure is unknown at this time. For questions, please contact Robin Snyder at 304-640-0724.
