Huntington residents are being asked to bag their leaves to prevent sewer system blockages.
Residents must bag the leaves when clearing their lawns, and the city will pick them up, a news release from Huntington Mayor Kim Wolfe said. The city will take the bags at the normal garbage pickup locations. Those who have more than four bags a week are asked to contact the Street Division at (304) 696-4484 so pickup can be arranged. Leaves can also be disposed of at the Dietz Hollow Landfiill in Guyandotte from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Leaves that are placed into street gutters may block storm water flow and cause flooding, the release said. A city ordinance prevents residents from obstructing gutters and to allow the free passage of water.
